Subscription or one-time purchase for a kids’ app? An honest look at both

Parents are tired of subscriptions, and they say so in reviews of every kids' app including ours. We took that seriously when deciding how Dreamify would charge. Here is the honest reasoning, including the parts that favour the other side.

The case for a one-time purchase

Parents trust it. There is nothing to cancel, nothing to forget, no feeling of being metered. For an app with fixed content, such as a set of recorded stories, it is clearly the right model, and the reviews that ask for it are right about that kind of app.

The case for a subscription

Dreamify writes a new story every night, draws a picture for it and narrates it, in some cases in a cloned voice. Each of those has a real cost each night. A one-time price would have to be either very high or quietly subsidised by the families who stop using it, and neither felt honest. A subscription matches the cost to the use: a family that gets a story every night pays for a service that delivers every night.

What makes a subscription fair

  • A clear trial. Enough nights to know whether the ritual works for your child, with the price and the end date visible.
  • An easy cancel. Through Apple, in seconds, with no "are you sure" maze from us.
  • Nothing taken away. Stories a family kept remain theirs to replay after a subscription ends.
  • No surprises. The price per period is the price. No introductory offers that triple quietly.

What we would change if the costs changed

If generation became cheap enough that a nightly story cost almost nothing, the argument for a one-time price would get stronger, and we would look at it again. The decision is tied to the economics, not to a preference for recurring revenue.

How we answer the reviews

Honestly: here is why, here is what the subscription pays for, here is how to cancel. Most parents do not object to paying for something that works every night. They object to feeling tricked, and that is the thing we can actually promise not to do.
