What a coffee shop loyalty app actually needs: lessons from GERG

Paper stamp cards work because they are simple: buy coffee, get a stamp, eighth coffee free. They fail because they live in a wallet, get wet, get lost, and tell the shop nothing. When GERG Stroop & Coffee asked us for an app, the brief was essentially "keep the simplicity, lose the paper".

Here is what we learned building it.

1. Everything starts at the till

A loyalty app lives or dies in the three seconds at the counter. GERG has one membership QR code. You show it, the cashier scans it and confirms the receipt, and the points land on your account that instant, with the amount shown on your screen. No codes to type, no receipt to photograph, no "it will appear within 24 hours".

If the moment at the till is awkward, people stop opening the app, and nothing else you build matters.

2. Keep the stamp card people already understand

Every espresso-based coffee adds a stamp to a digital coffee card. On the eighth stamp you earn a stroopwafel. When the reward is ready it appears on the home screen; at the till you show the reward code, it is handed over, and the card starts filling again.

We could have invented a points-only scheme. We did not, because regulars already know how the stamp card works, and the app should feel like the thing they had, only better.

3. Levels that mean something

On top of stamps there are six membership tiers, from Bronze to Diamond. Every purchase moves you up, and each level unlocks a little more. Tiers give the regulars something the stamp card cannot: a reason to feel recognised, not just rewarded.

4. The menu is part of the loyalty program

A loyalty app that is only a card gets opened at the till and nowhere else. GERG's app carries the live menu with photos, prices and allergen information. You can favourite what you like and follow current campaigns from the home screen. The menu is the reason to open the app on the way to the shop, and the card is what you use when you get there.

5. Let people prepare before they arrive

You can build your cart in advance so ordering at the counter takes seconds. For a busy morning queue, this is worth more than any discount.

What this means if you run a brand

The pattern generalises well beyond coffee. The questions we ask every brand are the same: What is the moment at the counter? What do your regulars already understand? What would make them open the app when they are not in the shop?

If you are thinking about an app for your business, this is the kind of work we do. We design and build it, ship it to the App Store under your brand, and keep improving it after launch.
