A 20-minute ASO audit you can run on your own app today

You do not need a tool or a budget to find the biggest problems on your App Store page. You need twenty minutes, your phone, and the willingness to look at the page like a stranger. Go through this in order and write down every "no".

Minutes 0 to 5: the words

  • Title. Does it contain the app's name and one strong keyword, within 30 characters? Is the keyword one people actually search?
  • Subtitle. Does it say what the app does for the user, in search terms, with no word repeated from the title?
  • Keyword field. 100 characters, comma separated, no spaces after commas, no words already in the title or subtitle, no plurals of words you already have, no competitor names (they do not rank).
  • Description. Does the first sentence say the one thing the app does? Everything below the fold is barely read, so the first line carries the weight.

Minutes 5 to 10: the pictures

  • First screenshot. Zoom out until it is thumbnail sized. Can you read the headline? Do you know what the app does?
  • Order. Promise, proof, objection answered. Is that the order, or does the onboarding screen come first?
  • Icon. Next to five competitors in a search result, does it stand out, or blend in?
  • Preview video. If you have one, does the first two seconds show the product doing its thing? If not, it is better to have no video than a logo animation.

Minutes 10 to 15: the trust signals

  • Rating. Below 4.5 stars costs installs on every search result you appear in. Are you asking for ratings at the right moment, after a good result, with the native prompt?
  • Recent reviews. Read the last ten. Is there a complaint that appears three times? That is a product bug and a conversion leak at the same time.
  • Developer replies. Are the negative reviews answered? Shoppers read the replies.
  • Privacy labels. Are they accurate and as light as they truthfully can be? "Data used to track you" scares people off.

Minutes 15 to 20: the markets

  • Localization. For your top three non-English storefronts, is the metadata localized for intent, or translated word for word?
  • Screenshots per market. Does the first screenshot's headline speak the market's language, literally?
  • Pricing. Are prices set per storefront, or is one price converted everywhere?

Then: the tests

Product page optimization lets you test icon, screenshots and preview video variants on real store traffic. Run one test at a time, starting with the first screenshot's headline. Custom product pages let you build a page per search intent and point ads at it. Both are free, both are under-used, and both compound with every paid install you buy afterwards.

If you would rather have a second pair of eyes on all of this, we do written audits for free.
